BAY AREA BIKE BOYS

Fun inspires fun. Turns out all I need is a life-giving insta story of a weekend on bikes with pals out in SF (courtesy of my man RJ) to inspire me to do the same. 24 hours later, Daniel and I booked our flights. Within the next week we had Elan and Eric on board. Three (four?) days in SF to rip bikes, consume as many pastries and coffees as our bodies could handle, and HAVE FUN. Despite the unexpected chill that seems to reside over the bay area for far too long, we thrived. All the classics; Hawk Hill loop, Mt Tam with the dam side descents, a finisher around Paradise Cay. Fixed a flat for a local (my long lost crush…), watched my pals have their breath stolen at the peak of Tam, accidentally ate at a Michelon star restaurant, phenomenal coffee at the Coffee Movement, and found my confidence on a bike again. On our last day after our morning ride, the boys visited the redwoods while I went on a 2-a-day with RJ up Twin Peaks and around town.

SF is the best. Best place in the world. Below are photos mostly taken by Daniel (mixed with some iphone snaps). Daniel is one of the best photographers around, absolute honor to have his eye and camera on this trip.

ACROSS THE BORDER | HAMILTON, ON

My dear friend Jenna Lane invited me to spend a long weekend celebrating her 35th year. First trip to her hometown of Hamilton, ON. First visit to Niagara and Toronto as well. We crammed into a stretch limo one dreary afternoon and bounced between 3 fantastic vineyards. Tried mead for the first time – so good! Sunday was an ebb and flow of friends coming to the house, flipping cups and crushing some purple drink from a keg. The keg stand was unexpected, nonetheless impressive.

Thanks Jenna for being a gracious host and a consistent friend through all the years and miles between us. Happy 35.

ZION + VALLEY OF FIRE

Jan 1st, 2023. Day 3 of my TN to CA road trip. Rolled into the most ominous Zion. Snow kept a rapid pace on my windshield while I drove with the windows down, photographing every mesmerizing bend of the road and the giants beside me. Awoke at sunrise the next morning to hike Overlook Point. A relatively easy trek even with the snow. Below are the images from my wanderings that morning, later rolling through the Valley of Fire. The latter destination had a bit too much sunlight and tourists for my liking (can you spot the image that I photoshopped 12 people out of?). Here in LA now. Arriving to some of the worst and heaviest rainfall and flooding this state has seen in a century. So thats really cool.

SAN FRANCISCO | KODAK

Met my folks out in the bay area to celebrate Mother’s Day and have some getaway time. Caught sunset on Mt Tam, shot some hoops on the abandoned basketball court, went to a Sunday market, hiked a few miles in Muir Woods, and was nearly blown away on the trek to the Pt Reyes lighthouse.

Theres something to be said about being a photographer and utilizing that with people you love. I had a conversation recently with an old friend about this. As photographers, we have this incredible gift to document the lives of our families. We move apart, distance keeps those memories at bay for so much time. But when together, let’s make it count. I don’t want to just muse on these occasions. I want something tangible, a capsuled moment that i’ll never forget.

Playing basketball with my parents on that old abandoned YMCA court, watching them watch the ocean while the sun settled out at sea. That meant something to me. Us eating late night Chinese in the quietest ghost town of a diner. My father and I fighting near hurricane strength wind just to meet a fence that kept us from our lighthouse descent. My parents walking along Baker Beach together and the way the sun washed over my mom’s face.

The following were shot on Kodak Gold 200, Portra 400, and Ultramax 400 with 35mm and 120mm film.

YOSEMITE

It seems every year we find each other and a means to make each of our birthday’s special. 2020, for most, was a shit year. And while I won’t deny that, I look back to see that for each of our birthdays, we were together, riding bikes, or skiing, soaking up the very best of California. Eric’s birthday kicked off October and the opportunity to spend a few days and several miles biking Yosemite was the move. Due to the fires, it was going to be hit or miss on us even getting access. Thankfully, winds shifted enough to open the park, gifting us some of the most gorgeous skies and colors I’d ever seen there. Stargazing was a bit of a flop due to the haze, but sunrise was something special. A bear roamed our hotel. Like, walked up the stairs to our second floor pathway. That was fun.

Yosemite, my brothers, and bikes; I couldn’t ask for a better getaway.

Celebrated my 34th year on this planet with some of my favorite people in my favorite place. Watching skaters at Venice, skiing at Big Bear, eating lunch at the OC diner – all the best things. As with most personal trips, I like to savor the moments on film. Unfortunately, one of the three cameras I brought didn’t turn out a single photo on its roll. Thankful for the other 4 rolls that DID turn out!
